Hofsjokull glacier in Iceland, nord-east suburbs of Milan, Italy, and the city of Wesenberg in Germany are the very first images by the Italian Space Agency's (ASI) mission Cosmo-SkyMed Second Generation.
Officially started with the launch in December 2019 from the Kourou base, the Italian COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation (CSG or COSMOSG) mission was conceived and planned by ASI, together with the Italian Ministry of Defense and the Italian space industry. COSMOSG will join the four first generation COSMO-SkyMed (CSK) satellites already in orbit.
The innovative features of the constellation allow satellite radars to characterize the nature of the observed territory and to represent it with false color images - thus distinguishing water, trees, crops, glaciers or a ground covered by snow. The very high spatial resolution also allows the detailed representation of urban or industrial environments, extracting information not only from reflective surfaces, but even from shadows. The satellite system will be used in various applications: from the security and surveillance of territories, to the prevention and analysis of calamitous events due to natural or anthropogenic causes.
Within the COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation constellation, Planetek has been responsible for the design and implementation of Non-standard processors and Image Quality Assessment.
