The European Space Agency joined the DigitalXADB Virtual Tech Expo event, with the virtual booth: “European Space Agency: the experience of cloud processing of satellite data to support disaster risk reduction”.
DigitalxADB is the third in a series of annual knowledge-sharing events for Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) staff members, consultants, contractors, and partners to learn about and take part in efforts to further integrate digital into ADB’s DNA.
ESA and ADB are cooperating in a series of projects to demonstrate how satellite EO can help better manage disaster risks. In the context of DigitalxADB 2021 virtual tech expo ESA showcased EO4SD-DRR and EO4WR projects. The two projects are implemented by a consortium of specialist service providers in the European Earth Observation sector, which include Planetek Italia
EO services provided are based on new capabilities such as the Geohazard Exploitation Platform (GEP) and the Rheticus® platform that are on-line environments enabling access to big data from space and generate geo-information such as precise terrain motion maps. Large collections of the free & open data from the Sentinel missions of the European Copernicus programme were used to support risk assessment or reconstruction planning in areas affected by earthquakes and land subsidence. Demonstrations and capacity development actions were conducted with nationally mandated user organisations in different sites in Sulawesi and Java, Indonesia. The advanced cloud platforms used have shown their ability to deliver reliable and actionable information for disaster risk reduction.
On Friday 29 October 2021 the ESA live session has illustrated the activites in support of Indonesian Government and other activities of the EO4SD programme.
