EO4GEO developing space geo information sector skills and competences to support Copernicus User Uptake

EO4GEO: Skills development and capacity building in the space / geo-information sector in Europe.

Towards and innovative strategy for skills development and capacity building in the space geo-information sector supporting Copernicus user uptake.

Promoted by the EU Commission's agency EACEA (Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency), EO4GEO is a project fund under the Erasmus+ Programme. It gathers 26 partners and 22 initial associated partners, - among them is Planetek Italia -, drawn from a wide variety of backgrounds (academia, private and public sectors, etc.) and operating in complementary sectors (education/training, space/geospatial, etc.).  The project is coordinated by GISIG association and will last for 4 years as of the 1st of January 2018.

EO4GEO aims to help bridging the skills gap between supply and demand of education and training in the space/geospatial sector.

In order to reinforce the existing ecosystem and to foster the uptake and integration of space/geospatial data and services in end-users applications, EO4GEO will define a long-term and sustainable strategy taking into account the current and expected technological and non-technological developments in the concerned sectors.

The rise of Artificial Intelligence for Earth Observation.

Watch the WEBINAR On-Demand

Participants will become familiar with AI concepts, from machine to deep learning, from unsupervised to supervised methods. Furthermore, applications in object detection, semantic segmentation, classification, clustering, and data augmentation will be showed.

The webinar is mainly non-technical, and all AI researchers, EO experts, GIS technicians, and technology enthusiasts are invited.

Planetek role

How are the Space and the Earth observation sectors evolving from a technological and application point of view? What needs are to be met in the near future? What skills and professional skills will be needed?

Planetek has the task of analyzing and understanding the dynamics in progress and future trends, in order to draw up guidelines. In brief, the task includes an analysis of the trends, challenges and opportunities of Earth observation and the Space sector in general in the coming years in Europe, aimed at identifying training needs and future professional profiles able to meet the employment needs of the next years.

Amongst the actions to be implemented in this context, one can mention:

  • The creation and the regular update of an ontology-based body of knowledge for the space/geospatial sector;
  • The development of a dynamic collaborative platform;
  • The organisation of a series of training actions in three sub-sectors (integrated applications, smart cities and climate change) to test and validate the approach.
